They did that by stuffing the car full of batteries, which left like 200 lb of cargo capacity. They also don't have any battery thermal management and no fast charging. If you did that with SparkEV, it'd also get over 1200 km, but that's hardly a usable car.
 
I got to meet Jehu, Eric and see touch, explore the Phoenix car when it was in Sacramento. There's a brief shot of me at the 6:57 mark. Had a great 4 hrs hanging out with them and making new friends with my Spark EV.

How much range can be gained via swapping in new tesla cells and removing old?
 
If what they say is true, that the cells have twice the capacity for 150% of the volume, it would mean they pack 33% more energy in the same volume.
But the page below only shows a 15% increase in energy density

But the other benefit is that they should be cheaper to produce.
