I would really not want to keep it trickled for the full 3 months of Winter here.

If you are driving daily, you don't need a 12 volt battery tender. If you need the tender (for storage of more than a long weekend in some cases), then just leave it on all the time. You won't hurt the battery with a proper tender, but you will damage it should it get discharged.
