    A Tesla and a Spark

I don't really need a second car. And I don't really need the two ICE cars I also have - but I just like cars! Most people are reporting only a modest amount of battery degradation with the Teslas. Some have 100,000 miles on them with only a little range loss. I'll be watching mine carefully...

    A Tesla and a Spark

Early this week I bought a Tesla to go along with my Spark EV. I had been debating on the Tesla purchase for many months: considering new and looking at used as well. A Toyota dealer near me just listed this 2013 S85 - and had it priced very aggressively. The car has 19,000 miles and is in...

    Maintaining battery life

Nobody likes to see battery degradation but it's normal and inevitable. Best we can do is try to minimize it by using some of the well-known techniques to preserve the battery. An important thing to remember: lithium batteries degrade with time and usage but seldom completely fail. Several...

    Maintaining battery life

I just did two 100% charge to about 30% charge cycles. I recorded several data points during both discharges and computed the capacity from the energy usage screen. Got 18.8 kWh and 18.95 kWh. These figures are very close to the 19 KWh I saw 9 months and 9000 miles ago when the car only had a...

    Maintaining battery life

    - It is what it is and I can live with 35% battery capacity degradation at the end of 8 years and still love driving this car. And that's all that really matters!

    Maintaining battery life

I think drawing conclusions from this and other BEV's, with similar thermal management, similar chemistry and similar capacity usage is reasonably useful. I'm not obsessive enough to keep charts and worry that much about battery degradation. It is what it is. I think most of the better...

    Maintaining battery life

I haven't kept detailed records, but I haven't seen 10% degradation in my '14 battery over 9000 miles so far. In fact, the computed re-charge capacity has only changed minimally from the 19 kWh I saw initially. Maybe down a fraction of a kWh. I haven't "babied" my battery. But I have, where...

    Maintaining battery life

Could you use your delayed charging to arrive at 100% right before you depart work? That would really minimize your 100% SOC time. I typically only use about 50% of a full charge per day. So I charge to about 80-85% in the morning by setting my departure time about 1 1/2 hours later than my...

    Maintaining battery life

I can understand, and agree with, the rationale of keeping the Spark plugged in during temperature extremes. Over 90° and less than 32°. When plugged in, battery conditioning will occur in these extreme conditions, providing better initial cold weather capacity and cooling the battery if temps...

    Maintaining battery life

The Spark, the Tesla, and almost all EV's block a certain amount of battery capacity at both the top and bottom of the range to extend battery life. Many hybrids use only 60% or so of battery capacity to extend life. But most pure EV's push their batteries much harder often using 90% of...

    Maintaining battery life

I would respectfully disagree. There is plenty of evidence, including technical data, to indicate that lithium ion batteries kept at 100% SOC degrade much faster. Tesla recommends only charging to 80–90% unless you absolutely need the full range. The same applies for extreme discharging. Try to...

    Jack points and tire rotation

Rotating tires left to right reverses the direction of rotation and reduces feathering and cupping. The tires will last longer and be much quieter.

    Caution on the tax credit

I "scored" the $7500 too. At least initially on my tax return. But the IRS has 3 (or more) years to decide to audit the return. I'm hoping filing for the credit doesn't trigger an audit.

    Soften the suspension?

I put the headrest arms in a large vice, used a "cheater bar" (a 24" length of pipe over the arm) and bent the arms backwards about 15°. Moved it back just enough to be completely solve the issue.

    Best charging behaviors?

Lots of information can be found on this. Lithium batteries degrade fastest at highest and lowest charge levels. Ideally (but frequently not possible) keep the battery near half charge - only charging to 100% when max range is needed. And try to avoid fully discharging it.

    Highest mileage spark EV?

That's great to see! How's your car doing? Any service issues or abnormal wear? Have you noticed any battery degradation? Do you usually charge to 100%? Use fast charging often?

    Fake noise maker

Someone figure out a way to disable it without triggering messages. You'll be a hero.

    Fake noise maker

Where is the actual noisemaker unit itself? Seems like it's toward the lower left front of the car. Maybe it could be muffled instead of disconnecting the controller.

Idaho Buyer looking for a Lease Deal

Many states, including mine, require that a resident bringing a car permanently into the state must title and tag it (in state) within 90 days. This would immediately result in double payment of the registration/title fees. And other issues are frequently associated with this re: the lease...

Idaho Buyer looking for a Lease Deal

I'm not sure it's as simple as just having an Oregon address. I believe you must also title and register the vehicle in Oregon.
