Charge Cycle won't end

Thu Aug 08, 2019 1:20 pm

Hi all ... brand new owner here of 2016 LT2 ... and a 2017 Volt of 2 years.

When my Spark completes it's charge cycle, it doesn't stop drawing power. It does ramp down the wattage drawn from 3.3kw to about 250w an hour (too much in my mind to be idle). When I unplug it, I finally get the notification from Onstar saying that the charge is complete which could be many hours after it actually completed. On my Volt, I get that notice as soon as it's topped off and it doesn't draw any more power.

Is this normal. If not, has anyone seen this behavior?

Thanks for any input

Not normal.
It is probably the BMS trying to balance the cells.
TMS uses more power than that and you'd hear the fans, circulating pump and AC running, (if it's needs to cool and not heat as it would in the winter).

If it continues, I'd say there is a problem. Give it a few days...

But then,,, good luck convincing the local Chevy 'Techs' that this is a problem..... :(

GM needs Modern Troubleshooting tools for Modern EV's.
3 step Trouble Tree, 1st try, nope, 2nd try / cost $800. 3rd try fixed it.

I have this all the time. I believe it’s due to my enclosed garage getting heated up and then it’s hot and the fan stays on to cool it down but there’s no way to cool it down, so it keeps pulling juice and running the fan and being hot and it’s a vicious cycle. That’s what I think. I’ve had my 2015 to the dealer numerous times and they’ve finally said nope everything is fine and GM says there doesn’t seem to be a problem. 😡🤬🤬 So they won’t look at it for that problem anymore. They can’t duplicate my garage, they can’t duplicate the problem, so there is no problem. 🤦‍♂️😡🤬🤬

So my solution is to set it to charge for departure. At least then if I don’t leave right away it’s not on for many many hours straight.

In the winter, this isn’t a problem at all.

But, in the winter it never fails that I’ll randomly get the “check engine” light. The car seems fine, runs fine, charges fine, just has that error light on the DIC. And it’s been to the dealer several times for that, and also been told they can’t find what’s wrong. They see in the log that the computer triggered the light to turn on, but they can’t find WHY it said to turn on the light. The last couple of times I took it in for that, they checked the codes and saw they were the same codes and said ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . Now all they’ll do is clear the code. The last time I had the error, it cleared on its own, so I didn’t even take it in.

So, yeah, loads of fun.

This started happening recently on my Spark. It seems to mainly happen after I've taken it out for a long drive and used up most of the range. At first we thought it was because of the warm days of summer, but then the fans kept running on some really cool days. Took it to Chevy and was told there was nothing wrong. Didn't surprise me since it's such an elusive problem.

So now, we just unplug it when it acts this way.

have you noticed the front end (hood/grill/top of fenders) being warm to touch during this cycle? i'm trying to figure out why this happens to my Spark on occasion,

I haven’t laid hands on the car when it happens, no. But right now it’s an every day thing, so I can check in the morning.
