Bought my Spark EV ;)

(A 'wink' to the recent "Sold my Spark EV" thread).

I *finally* bought a replacement SparkEV to take the place of the one my wife destroyed last year. (Pictures here, if you are curious : http://www.mychevysparkev.com/forum/vie ... 297#p20297 ).

I've been looking for over 10 months, and hardly anything came up that met my criteria (low miles, DCFC, NOT BLACK) that wasn't outrageously priced (low mileage Sparks are selling for a huge premium compared to ones that average 8-10K/yr or more).

2015 with only 12K miles for $8500 !!

Me too! Just bought my first one! Had to make the deal remotely with a dealership in Stockton, and get it shipped here to Las Vegas in the next week or so. 2016 Certified preowned with 29k miles. Can’t wait til it gets here!

Torque Pro says that my 2015 Spark EV with 12K miles has 16.9 kWh of battery capacity (as I drove off the lot). I will be keeping an eye on it, but that's a tad less than 10% loss in about 4 years. I'll be happy if I only lost 1.5 kWh every 4 years ;) (Real-world Tesla data shows them losing most battery at the beginning, then the loss flattening out after a few years/as miles are driven.) So when the car is 12 years old, it might have 'only' 65 miles of range? I'll take that!

Congratulations! Very cool that you're tracking capacity and have torque pro from the beginning of your ownership.

Yesterday was the 1 year anniversary with my Spark. It had between ~16.0-16.5 kwh (believe it was closer to 16.5) according to the energy screen when received, and now on both the energy screen and torque pro, it has 14.0. I did put 23,000 miles on it though :D

Bahaha! I replaced my fronts when driving in the rain became.... truly terrifying. I'm running some cheap Lexani 185/55/15's. Good riding, grip is noticeably better than the stock ecopias, but efficiency has suffered a bit.

Did something Tue night that I've never done before : charge via DCFC up to 100%.

That's something that I always avoided in the past (generally stopping around 65-75% when fast charging). However, I decided to try it tonite because :

1) It was about 45F outside (the battery pack was at 58 when I started), so I wasn't too worried about heat (which *kills* Li-Ion batteries)

2) I have Torque Pro installed and configured, and I wanted to watch the nitty-gritty of the charging process (and could monitor temp)

2) I had access to a 150A DCFC (62 kW max power) and I wanted to see ... how it went

So max charge rate was somewheres around 53 kW (around 70% SoC), pulling 130-135A at 395-398-ish Volts. (Amps started ramping down once pack reached 398V.) kW rate started slowly ramping down around 75%, dropping into the 30s (kW) and then down to the 20s (after passing 85%).

Battery temp slowly climbed from high 50s to around 75-77, but never got into the 80s (which is why I did it on a cold night). Temp actually went down (down to about 74-75F) between 85-95%, as the kW rate slowed, then crept back up to 77-78F as the battery got close to "real full".

I set Torque to show "displayed SoC" *and* "actual SoC", and the car continued charging at 2-3 kW rate after displayed SoC hit 100% ("actual" SoC was around 97.3%, IIRC).

I don't plan on ever doing that again, but it was informative. I also plan on fast charging only in the evening when it's cooler, or very early in the AM when the pack is cold (when I can, that is). During the summer, I will probably avoid DCFC as much as I can, and only charge early in the AM.

Did you notice any other EV's swinging by while you stayed to 100%? :cry:

When I do it in the summer I immediately hear the fans and AC compressor ramping up to cool the pack as required.
Maybe that last 2-3kW was TMS finishing up its job? But then the temps never got even close to 'hot'....
I don't worry about it and just use DCFC whenever I need it. That's what it's there for ! :) Stay down Leaf.... :lol:

But then again,, I still don't have Torque Pro working with this car. I had it working on my Volt. I would love to see all this data!
I haven't used London's video yet to try to figure out how to get the PID's I have in my download folder on my phone into the app. Thanks for posting that Bud!
I have an older 7" tablet I'd like to leave in the car once I get it figured out!
I have two different OBD II - BT dongles to try it. There was an issue last time I tried. I mainly just drive the car for free! Although, this time of year I plugin at my home L2 for TMS reasons. :(

Thanks for the post. Very informative. I usually charge to 90-95% when I use DCFC to charge my 2016 Spark EV. At home I charge to 100% overnight using my L2 EVSE. During hot summer nights when my garage is very hot, I use the Departure Time charging feature and set the completion time to a time past the time that will give me approximately 80% of full charge at the time I actually want to use the car the next morning. It takes a bit of experimenting to determine the end time needed to give 80% of full charge and you must take into consideration the charging rate you are using. But... it works!

So far, my highest battery temperature at the time of measurement is 88 deg. F and the lowest is 59 deg. F for the time interval of June 18 thru January 19. 38 measurements were taken during this time interval. I see similar results for my 2014 Spark EV which does not have DCFC. Battery capacity degradation over this same time interval is 0.7 kWh for my 2014 Spark EV and 0.8 kWh for my 2016 Spark EV. The degradation numbers for both cars track perfectly so I am assuming it is due to the drop in ambient temperature between June 18 and January 19. I will know this assumption is correct if these numbers continue to track together and start to rise as the ambient temperature starts rising as we move towards summer.

Regardless, I will take my TorquePro equipment with me the next time I use DCFC and see what the battery temp is immediately after a 95% charge. I need to do this in the hot summer too. This morning it was 37 deg. F outside here in Manteca, CA but my garage was 55 deg. F.

No, I didn't (it was 10:30 at night). I would have given up the spot immediately had anybody come by (most people in this area will pull up and ask "how long do you think you'll be?"). There were also 2 other available DCFCs (slower ones).

Personally, as I mentioned, I don't like fast charging past 75% or so - because heat kills. In the winter, (well, with a cold battery pack to start) it's not as important (IMO) because the pack (and its sunk heat) are cooler to start, AND the heat will radiate away faster at 40F ambient. Personally, I wouldn't want the temp of the battery to get much over 80 degrees. Also, with EVgo, you are paying by the minute and the charging rate (kW) starts dropping around 75-80% (although it doesn't get really low until 88-90% - 22-25kW). But if you need the charge for the trip (and reserve safety), you need the charge for the trip.

You must be feeling pretty spoiled now, what with all the EVgo stations that are now between Manteca and the Bay Area. One in Tracy for "OMG! I need 5 kWh to get home!!!", a whole row of sites (?4? ?7?) in Livermore/Pleasanton, 2 units (one site) in Hayward, and then a slew off I-880 on the eastshore of the bay. Quite a difference from 2-3 years ago, eh? (Note: there is a somewhat inexpensive ChargePoint 125A/50kW DCFC under the approach to the Dumbarton bridge (CA-84) in Newark : $0.12/kWh - useful for a "top up" for tooling around the bay, or before heading home if you are passing nearby. There's also an identical FREE charger up in Richmond {but that's a ways north} off I-580 at the Rosie the Riveter museum.)


I have "battery coolant pump rpm" and "battery coolant temp" gauges enabled in Torque - I haven't seen them in use yet, due to my OCD babying of the pack.

I know that in the Bolt, the battery cooling turns on earlier (lower bat temp), and runs/cools at a higher/faster rate if the A/C is on inside the car. Next time you are fast charging the Spark and the bat temp goes over (say) 80/81, try turning on the A/C to see if that activates the heat pump or cools the battery coolant fluid. As a data point.
