That's why the overall best option for our cars is this: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00U1OLOP0

2X the light, and no beam-pattern issues. The only downsides are price and shorter life than standard bulbs.

which are significant downsides ;-)

there is a spectrum of "better than OEM" lamps available from Philips:

Correct. I chose the ones that give the most light, which overrides any considerations of cost (minor), or replacement every few years, IMHO.

I don't disagree with you. The stock headlights are ridiculous, I'm thinking I need to trim the wicks and add more whale oil to the lamps

So I just received these $38 specials today.... https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01 ... UTF8&psc=1

Don't even consider it....
The 'Garage Door Pattern' is all over the place. No matter how I tried to 'clock' these things they would not create a Low Beam Cut-Off pattern.
I have the amazon return label printed. They are going back tomorrow. I spent about 5 minutes of fiddling with one.
It's important to leave one side stock for comparison during the trial period.

As you can see the LED element itself is so big (compared to a filament) there can't be a focal point on the H13 headlight reflectors.
You can see they try with staggered element placement the way an H13 bulb's filaments are. Both sides come on with High Beam too! , but no cigar.

I think H13 are such a unique bulb and reflector combo that it is starting to look like high power incandescents may be the only option for more lumens.
I think EldRitch is right.

edit:
So, just to get started,, I ordered one. Less than half a 2 pack: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B005KDO8BY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I chose the Philips high-end version, specifically because it does not have blue paint on it. I'm more interested in better light than in cosmetics.

I noticed that Philips advertising quotes output for the XtremeVision, but not on the CrystalVision (with blue paint).

For the CrystalVision, Philips only states "Choose Philips CrystalVision ultra headlight bulbs for the look of HID"

I conclude that only likely cause for that is because the CrystalVision puts out appreciably less light than the XtremeVision.
